One of the challenges for any English teacher is to keep the students engaged, and one of the best ways to do this is to include some classroom games to make learning more fun and exciting. By playing games, students can have fun and later on they will realize they also learn something from it. Games are also important to build rapport with the students. Games are also made as great rewards for students who do well in class, or as a treat if the class focuses on their work during the lesson. Teachers can use some games in the classroom like: (1.) Charades- This one is a great game to get the students to move. In this game, students mime action verbs while the others watch. The team will receive a point for every words correctly answered. (2.) Pictionary- This is like a charade, the difference is the student will draw, instead of acting the words. There are some rules like; students cannot use words, symbols or hand gestures. (3.) Board Race- This is a flexible and active way to start the class or practice vocabulary. Teacher will draw a line down the middle of the board and write a topic at the top. The students must write as many words they can related to the topic in a relay. The first person will write the first word and pass the colored marker to the next student in line. The team will get one point for every correct word. (4.) Last Man standing- This game gives the students time to think and encourage peer learning. Students should form a circle. Teacher will stand at the center and name a category (food, hobbies, animals, etc.) and ask the students to give words under the category chosen. If they repeat a word, or cannot say any more words they will be out of the game. The last student standing wins the game. (5.) Hangman- This game can be used at the start of the class to warm up the students and get them active. This game is especially useful for helping students remember the spelling of new words. First, one will think of a word and write the number of letters on the board using dashes to show many letters there are. Then, ask students to suggest a letter. If it is in the word, teacher must write it in all of the correct spaces. If the letter does not appear in the word, teacher must write it to the side and begin drawing the image of a hanging man. Teacher has to continue this until the students guess the word correctly, the students will win. (6.) Categories- This game is used to review vocabulary. The students should draw six columns on their paper and write a category at the top of each column. The challenge is to think of as many items in a category as they can. By playing games, the students become more motivated and they likely to participate in the activities and do their tasks in the class. Teachers can also have games if a lesson finishes a bit earlier than expected. Teachers can also think of specific games which can help them assess the students at the end of the class. Games are indeed great help for teachers in managing their lessons.
