There are thousands of languages around the world. Each language has its own peculiarities. The grammar of some languages is sort of complicated. Some languages do not have an ample variety of words. Others don’t have any script. Some languages are spoken by millions of people while others by just a few hundred once. Beauties of English are several. Of all the existing languages, large and small, English is the second only after Chinese in a number of speakers. It has over three hundred million native speakers and a second language by millions of people in many non-native countries. It has the largest expansion of any language on earth, appearing in several countries on every continent as an official and unofficial language. Most of the world's scientific publications, magazines, newspapers, and books are entirely or partly in English. In international meetings, English is used more often than any other language. Being an international language spoken by more than two billion people all over the world, English is developing in different directions day by day and hour by hour. It is impossible to mention all the beauties and peculiarities of English at once. The originality and the beauty of this language can be seen not solely comparing it with other languages of the globe, but also finding its singularities within the language. While exploring the English language very thoroughly, one will find several unique facts connected with its alphabet, words, and sentences. It’s worth mentioning a number of these facts. For example, the foremost common letter in English is "E", and “Q” is the letter used the least. To place it in perspective, “E” is fifty-six times more common than “Q.” Although eleven percent of the entire English language is simply the letter “E”, however, most of the words in English begin with the letter “S”. With English words, it’s more fun. Approximately one new word is added to the English language every two hours and around four thousand new words are added to the English dictionary annually. The latest one includes ‘Mx’ which is a neutral gender form of address instead of using Mr. or Ms. There is also another way of making new words, for example by joining together parts of existing words, which is called a "blend". Many new words appear in the English language according to “blend”. Examples are "brunch" which is breakfast and lunch together, or "motel", that is motorcar and hotel. It is also common to make new words repeating the same word twice. A great example of it is “so-so” which means “fine, just okay”. There are many words in the English dictionary which are number one in some categories. For example, the Oxford English Dictionary has defined “time” as the most frequently used noun. The most commonly used adjective according to the same dictionary is “good”. The word with 464 definitions, as the word with the most variety, is “set”. The longest English word that is possible to spell without repeating any letter is “uncopyrightable”. The most mispronounced word in English is “pronunciation”. “Queueing” is the only word that has five vowels in a row. The most famous word with all the letters in alphabetic order is “almost”. “Bookkeeper” is the only word that has three consecutive doubled letters. The longest word in English with 45 letters is “pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis”. It is a type of lung disease. If write out every number in order as words, there is no letter “A” until one thousand and no letter “B” until one billion. Some English words are spelled the same whether you read left-to-right, like normal, or right-to-left. An example word is “madam”. Some English words look the same upside down as right-side up. A perfect example is the word “SWIMS” with all capitalized letters. A pangram is a sentence that contains every letter from the alphabet and a very famous example of it is: “The quick brown fox jumps over a lazy dog.” It is very useful for testing typewriters or keyboards. Although the English language has approximately one million words, ninety percent of English text consists of just a thousand words. From all these facts we can see that the English language is as fascinating as it is popular and obviously has its own history and quirks. Instead of only focusing on grammar and different theoretical aspects, we need to pay attention and don’t forget to enjoy its more entertaining side.
