Motivating Students One of the most difficult aspects of becoming As an EFL teacher is learning how to motivate the students who are de motivated, not learning effectively. It is also one of the most important. They won’t retain information; they won’t participate and some of them may even become disruptive. A student may be unmotivated for a variety of reasons such as they have no interest in the subject, find the teacher’s methods un-engaging or be distracted by external forces. A student who appeared unmotivated, has difficulty learning and is need of special attention. Motivating students can be a difficult task, the rewards are more than worth it. Motivated students are more excited to learn and participate. motivated students are learning lively. Some students are self-motivated, naturally. But even with the students who do not have this natural drive, a great teacher can make learning fun and inspire them to reach their full potential like, 1. Encourage Students Praise the students often. Recognize them for their contributions. 2. Participation One way to encourage students is to get them involved in the classroom and teach them responsibility. It is sometimes appropriate for teachers to take an active role in trying to improve the motivation levels of a group.Make students work in groups and assign each a task or role. Giving students a sense of ownership allows them to feel accomplished and encourages active participation in class. 3. Offer Incentives Setting expectations and making reasonable demands encourages students to participate, but sometimes students need an extra push in the right direction. Offering students small incentives makes learning fun and motivates students to push themselves. Rewards give students a sense of accomplishment and encourage them to work with a goal in mind. 4. Get Creative Classroom climate is important. If students experience the classroom as a caring, supportive place where there is a sense of belonging and everyone is valued and respected, they will tend to participate more fully in the process of learning. Avoid monotony by changing around the structure of the class. Teach through games and discussions instead of lectures, encourage students to debate and enrich the subject matter with visual aids, like colorful charts, diagrams and videos. Teacher can even show a movie that effectively illustrates a topic or theme. Create a warm, stimulating environment in the classroom using posters, models, student projects and seasonal themes. 5. Draw Connections to Real Life It is tempting to think of motivation as primarily residing within the student, self-efficacy beliefs, value for learning, self-determination, and achievement goals are informed by a host of factors – including prior experiences with others in a classroom setting and the instructional practices of teachers. Moreover, the study of motivation and learning is left wanting if not considered as being interconnected with identity processes and achievement-related emotions – two factors that are implicit in existing motivation frameworks, yet they possess a certain theoretical richness. A broader understanding by educators of the effects of these variables on students may enhance achievement in important ways, and spark and sustain interest in the classroom.
