Unit 7 touched upon the importance of teaching vocabulary, grammar and language functions, and that when a student is learning a new language it is important that they be exposed to it, understand the meaning, understand how it is constructed, and be able to practice and produce it. Therefore, using the right lesson plan is important and the same method cannot necessarily be used to teach all aspects of a new language. Unit 7 taught me that when planning a lesson for grammar or vocabulary the straight-arrow ESA approach is often quite effective, whereas a boomerang or patchwork ESA approach is often used for language function lessons. This unit also provided information on what students must know when learning a new language. When learning new vocabulary students should know the meaning of the word, how it is used, the word grammar, its interaction with other words, spelling and pronunciation. Grammar lessons should also touch upon what language means and its correct usage, but also on the forms and patterns of the language and if there are any differences between the written and spoken forms. Lastly, this unit showcased that language functions include areas such as suggestion, inviting and refusing, and also the appropriateness of what kind of language is used (ie. formal, informal, etc.).
