In this unit we covered teaching vocabulary, grammar, and functions. When selecting vocabulary we need to consider the following criteria: suitability to the students and the task frequency and coverage teachability What does a student need to know about a vocabulary item? what it means how it is used word grammar, where it belongs in a sentence how it affects other words spelling pronunciation Typically, for vocabulary ESA lesson we would chose straight arrow structure. For grammatical structures, we need to explain meaning, usage, forms and patterns, and differences in spoke and written forms. Patchwork grammar lessons are very common. By language functions we imply such areas as inviting, refusing, agreeing, disagreeing, suggesting etc. The main emphasis of this lesson would be activation of language functions thus patchwork or boomerang structures would be more useful.
