Teaching is a science and art, it is a science because it organizes knowledge and uses testable processes in its assessment. It is also an art because teachers must apply creativity in the process. A teacher can be described as someone who assists someone to apprehend something. He or she breaks down knowledge into its simplest form that can be understood by everyone. If a teacher relates to a person, then the process as a whole is called teaching. This process involves skills and practices in order to be effective. Teaching brings a lot of experience to the teacher and to the students at large, but it is the teacher who experiences much more because he or she does a lot of observations. One thing I have experienced over the years is that, a good teacher should make the class very interactive. In a scenario where there are a lot of presentations and reporting in the class room the teacher should always listen. In Africa, many teachers walk into the classroom, deliver a speech and when it is time he or she moves away. The student does not get the chance to ask questions bothering them. Teaching should not be done in such a manner, teachers should interact with the students to elicit ideas from them. This will make the classroom more interesting and fun. Classroom experience helps to strengthen teachers. Teaching makes you feel connected to a family the students and the school at large. The more you talk to each other every day; it strengthens and connects both the teacher and the student. Teachers are role models both in the classroom and outside the classroom. In addition, the teacher manages the class room affairs. The teacher is the boss of the classroom. He or she helps in promoting learning and supplementing activities using varieties of teaching approaches and adapting instructions to include all students. To add up, teachers are assessors of students. A teacher cannot teach a lesson, finish and move on. Teachers must assess each student’s growth and figure ways to help the weaker ones. Also, teachers have roles to play outside the classroom. For example, teachers act as counselors. At times, the teacher works like a counselor in addressing issues relating to a student’s life outside the classroom. There are challenges that do not motivate teachers to teach. It discourages teachers in performing their duties. Some of these challenges and how to improve them include; To start with, one of the biggest challenge teacher’s faces in the classroom is inadequate resources. Lack of resources such as textbooks, visual aids and teaching materials as a whole is a problem. Visual aids makes it easier in explaining vocabularies to students. Lack of this makes teaching tedious. To deal with this challenge, school management and teachers should team up in other to gather the necessary materials needed by the teacher to make teaching easier and effective. Also there is lack of motivation for teachers. There are no provisions made for teachers to give rewards to encourage the students to do more. For example when teachers volunteer to do extra duties, authorities should motivate them to keep them working extra harder. Also teachers can be praised publicly to keep them motivated. In conclusion, every teacher plays a vital role in the lives of students in their classroom. Therefore these roles should be performed effectively to ensure the growth of every student.
